79 West Street, Valletta, Malta

Delicate refurbishment of the existing structure roofing the stairwell of this early 20th Century building in Valletta.

The stairwell roof consisted of steel beams spanning between masonry walls, with masonry stone slabs (‘xorok’) spanning between the steel beams.

Structural investigative works showed that the existing steel beams were heavily corroded at their bearing ends, with near full loss of steel sections observed in the webs of all the beams.

The proposed remedial works entailed careful replacement of the existing steel beams with new galvanised steel beams and carefully planned temporary works to allow replacement of the steel beams without damaging the existing stone slabs.
