The beautiful property forms part of a square of Grade 2 listed townhouses in Knightsbridge, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, London.
KonceptX were the structural engineers of this exciting challenging project, alongside Nash Baker Architects.
The project brief was to sensitively refurbish the listed early 19th C townhouse, construct a new deep basement below the garden for a contemporary swimming pool, and improve the environmental performance of the house to the highest possible standards.
The structural works consisted primarily of a new deep basement in complex ground conditions, the demolition of a 1960’s rear extension and its replacement with a new 4-storey rear extension and a new single storey garage at the rear of the site. The challenging refurbishment also included the introduction of a new mansard steel roof.
The new basement perimeter was formed by secant piled walls along the two short sides and reinforced concrete underpins along the longer lengths. A detailed movement study had to be carried out as part of the Construction Method Statement at planning stage to demonstrate that the anticipated movements would be limited to a Category 1 level of damage.
The completed townhouse boasts double aspect views, linking it to Brompton Square at the front and Holy Trinity Anglican Church at the rear.
